The speaker today, we had Dr. Sam Winter to talk about “Growing up transgender in Asia.” Born in England, Sam has lived and worked in Hong Kong since 1984. As a psychologist, Sam has been working in sexual and gender diversity since 2000. He heads up a course on sexual and gender diversity for up to 500 students a year at the University of Hong Kong, where he works as an associate professor. His research focus is gender variant people (people who are transgender) in Asia. Sam has published more than twenty research papers and book chapters in this area, many in the area of healthcare and legal rights of transgendered individuals. His most recent work has been in hormone use and abuse, stigma and prejudice, and transgender sex work.
Sam shared with us some transgender cases, especially in Asia. A lot of transgender people in Asia face many problems—human rights, financial constraints and health problems. Due to discrimination, they are not able to find work easily or even graduate from university, which can push them into the sex industry; some of them got HIV from their participation in the latter.
