Dinner meeting: Tom Henderson CEO of Shelterbox

Today’s speaker was Mr. Tom Henderson, OBE, the founder of ShelterBox, a unique organisation that has literally helped put a roof over the head of tens of thousands of people made homeless by natural disasters.  Tom, who is also a Rotarian, brought a ShelterBox to show us what its contents are, which include a tent to sleep ten people, a stove, blankets, basic first aid, tools, books for children, and more.  He shared with us some stories from the field about how the boxes are deployed and how ShelterBox networks with existing NGOs and community leaders to determine how and to whom boxes are delivered.  ShelterBox has been on the radar for our club for several months now and we are assisting Tom to network in Asia to find possible suppliers.  While open-minded about any and all ideas, he is currently searching for a lantern that can be powered with solar cells and also serve as a means to charge mobile phones, so if you know anyone or any company that may have this capability, please get in touch with us!

We had a birthday boy today, Rtn Fali.  We also celebrated the Golden Anniversary of Rtn Fali and Rtnne Thrity.    We toasted Fali and Thrity with sparkling wine and then shared some of the magnificent “50” cake prepared for the occasion.  VP Rebecca presented a golden rose bouquet and President Stephen presented a bottle of champagne to them.

Our Sergeant at arms, PP Francesco collected HK$1,710 for raffle and fines and Rtn David’s guest Devin won a bottle of red wine as the raffle prize.
