Lunch Meeting: Mr. Francis Moriaty, RTHK Lead Reporter

We had a birthday boy today, PP Kishore.  Acting President Michael Wan presented him a bottle of red wine as birthday gift and PP Paul led us to sing the birthday to him.

We had two visiting Rotarians, one was PP Petro Ching from Rotary Club of HK City North and Rtn E. James Mason from Rotary Club of Colorado Springs, US.

The speaker today was Mr. Francis Moriaty, who talked about “Removing the Oxygen: How Free is Hong Kong’s Free Press?”  Francis was Senior political reporter for Radio Television Hong Kong from 1995 to 2014.  His responsibilities included reporting and analysing governmental and legislative affairs, political developments and legal issues with an emphasis on live reporting and anchoring broadcasts. Francis covered world leaders’ visits to China, and overseas trips by Chinese leaders and senior Hong Kong officials. He was RTHK’s lead reporter covering Hong Kong’s change of sovereignty in 1997.

He related to us stories about the Summit of U.S. President Obama with China President Xi at Sunnylands, CA (2013), the resignation of Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa (2005), and the handover of Hong Kong to China (1997).  With time running too short, we hoped that Francis could answer more questions from members at another meeting in the future.

Sergeant at Arms PP Francesco collected HK$1,704 in raffles and fines.  The raffle prize today was a bottle of red wine and the winner was PP Kishore.
