The plight of refugees in Hong Kong with speaker Gabriel Mugisha

We had new member induction today.  PP Thomas proposed Mr. Manoj Chellaram to be our new member and approved by the Board.  President Martin done the induction ceremony and Rtn Manoj’s classification was Private Banker.

The speaker today was Mr. Gabriel, and his topic was “The Plight of Refugees in Hong Kong”.  Gabriel Mugisha is a family friend of Rtn Otis, and is a refugee here in Hong Kong..

A refugee is a person who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country ... ” – The 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees

Gabriel came to HK and is determined by The UN Refugee Agency as refugee now; also, he was accepted by The United States and will go to US for study very soon.  Gabriel shared with us his experience as asylum seeker and hope that our community can support the service work on asylum seekers.

Our Sergeant VP Rebecca collected HK$440 for raffle and fines.  PP Paul got the raffle prize as a box of Japanese cakes, which he presented to Gabriel.
